BASECOAT is the true evolution in the way of working. Giardini basecoat has been designed to improve the final quality of the edge and reduce the number of applications needed to obtain a luxurious and high quality edge. Its purpose is to create a base with excellent adhesion on the leather item, which also fills all the imperfections of the edge, especially the line in the middle when working on edges made of hides paired with each other.
The Basecoat Dense (previously known as Dense Edge Paint Colourless) was designed to facilitate leathercrafters during the leather edge finishing process, especially when they work on leather edges with a very large width. Used as first layer on the raw leather edge, the Basecoat Dense increases the adhesion characteristics on the leather and acts as a filler for all the blank spaces of the edge surface.
Finishing leather edges made up with more than one leather layer (such as in bags, bag handles, wallets, etc.) this filling function will make the line in the middle of leather edge disappear. Usually with old leather edge paints you can still see the line in the middle.
During the application phase the Basecoat appears to be whitish in color but once dried has a semi-transparent color and a very solid consistency. Once completely dry, the Basecoat can be worked using a brush, a scotch-brite cloth or a sand paper (we recommend a very fine grain) in order to get a uniform and very smooth leather edge without any imperfection. Once you have prepared the leather edge in this way, you can proceed to the next coloring phases, choosing the most suitable paints for your leather type and your favorite finishing effects.
In case of application on oily/greasy leather the product may loose some adhesion due to the difficulties in penetrating the leather. In that case we suggest the use of the Adhesion Aid specifically designed to solve this kind of problem.
